Charleston, South Carolina - The 2013 decoy auction year had a slow start, but moved in to high gear at the Guyette, Schmidt & Deeter decoy auction in Charleston. The sale was held February 15th at the Charleston Marriot in Charleston, South Carolina in conjunction with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Being the first decoy auction in Charleston in over 23 years and generated much excitement bringing out many new Southeastern collectors. Bidding was strong with the auction grossing mid estimate at over $372,000.
The top two lots of the sale sold for $34,500 each. One was a full size preening whimbrel by Elmer Crowell of East Harwich, Massachusetts and the other was a classic 1936 model canvasback drake by the Ward Brothers of Crisfield, Maryland. Other auction include a full size running greater yellowlegs by Elmer Crowell selling for $17,250, a rare gadwall by Cigar Daisey selling for a world record price of $4,600, a full size “drop wing” greater yellowlegs by Elmer Crowell selling for $18,400, a full size ring neck plover by Elmer Crowell selling for $11,500, and a widgeon hen by Lee Dudley selling for $9,775.
